Tips and Tactics: Preparing for the Next Generation NCLEX

If you’re a recent nursing school graduate, you’re probably well aware of the Next Generation NCLEX (NGN), the latest evolution of the NCLEX-RN exam.

The NGN is designed to ensure that new nurses are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe and effective patient care, while also reflecting the ever-changing landscape of healthcare. Integrating Next Gen NCLEX practice questions into your study routine is absolutely essential to your success.

Below are some tips and recommendations that I believe will be extremely helpful as you prepare for the upcoming Next Generation NCLEX.

1. Get to Know the Format of the Next-Gen NCLEX

One of the biggest differences between the NGN and the current NCLEX-RN exam is the format. The NGN introduces a variety of new question types, so it’s crucial to become familiar with them. Understanding the format will help you recognize these questions when you encounter them, and more importantly, it will help you develop the skills and confidence needed to excel on the NGN.

2. Review the New NGN Content Areas

Reviewing the content areas covered on the exam is a key part of preparing for the NGN. While the focus of the NGN may shift slightly, rest assured that it still covers much of the same material as the current NCLEX-RN exam. For example, you might notice an increased emphasis on areas like pharmacology, patient safety, and community health.

To prepare, go back through your nursing school textbooks, notes, and any other study resources you have. Consider enrolling in an NCLEX preparation course or using an online study tool specifically designed for the NGN. It’s also important to stay informed about current issues and trends in healthcare. Since the NGN is designed to test your practical application of nursing knowledge, staying up-to-date with recent developments in the field will give you a deeper understanding of how the exam content relates to real-world patient care.

3. Master Time Management

Time management is always critical when taking an exam, but it will be especially important for the NGN. Due to its more interactive and hands-on format, the NGN may take longer to complete than the current NCLEX-RN exam. Additionally, you may find yourself spending more time on each question, which is why honing your time management skills is key to being fully prepared for the NGN.

When studying for the Next-Gen NCLEX, try taking practice tests or quizzes and timing how long it takes you to complete each question. This will help you gauge how much time you should allocate to each question during the actual exam.

During the exam, it’s also important to manage your energy levels and take breaks as needed. The NGN is expected to take several hours to complete, so building up your endurance beforehand will help ensure that you have the stamina to finish strong.
